Description:

The Lady's Slipper is 20 to 36 cm in height. It is shaped like a bell. The color of the Lady 's Slipper is white and the leaves and stem are green. The pistils are yellow.

About 3 to 4 long straight leaves grow from the center of the stem of the Small White Lady's Slipper. The flower of this plant resembles a small slipper and that is how it got it's name.

The Small White Lady's Slipper depends on insects, mainly bees, for pollination. It takes approximately 13 years for the small white lady's slipper to flower

Environment:

The Lady's Slipper lives in the marshes of Prince Edward Island and other places.

It has no shelter. Due to agriculture and the clearing of land it is found in marshes and on small unplowed prairies Some plants are found in marshes, in marshy limestone meadows, in prairie areas, and on the edges of brush

Problems:

Destruction of habitat by humans is the main reason for Small White Lady's Slippers becoming endangered.

The farming of land also threatens the Small White Lady's Slipper. Marshes are invaded by bushes which prevent sunlight from reaching the Small White Lady's Slippers.

The Small White Lady's Slipper does not like sunlight. It prefers shade.

Solutions:

In 1981, the Lady's Slipper became endangered. In 1975 the government passed laws so that the Small White Lady's Slipper could not be exported.

The Small White Lady's Slipper is a protected species.

Summary:

I already knew that the Lady's Slipper was endangered and that if was being destroyed for land.

The Small White Lady's Slipper's habitat is being taken over by farming and the building of homes.

I learned that plants are endangered as well as animals.
